When my mom asked me to make over her guest room into a beautiful little modern farmhouse haven, I was jumping for joy! I LOVE farmhouse home decor, as you may know. The only problem is, I have no need for anything new in my house so I don’t often get to explore this passion of mine. This was the perfect opportunity to do some shopping and get creative! There is a little back story to this room and why its makeover was so special to my mother. You see, not too long ago, my Grandfather passed away and this used to be his bedroom. When you lose someone close to you, it’s almost as if you want to leave everything right how it was as to not erase any memories. I knew that I needed to create a space that would keep a little piece of him but that would allow my mom to finally use this room again, peacefully.
Now, this room needed everything, and when I say everything, I mean mattress, decor, window treatments, bed, dresser, etc. I had a $1000 budget and I was out to completely transform this room. As you can see in most of the photos, this room already has a. beautiful warm gray color on the walls that worked perfectly with this theme. The bright wood trim also allowed for a beautiful contrast throughout. When I went shopping for this room there were a few things I kept in mind:
- Budget
- Modern Farmhouse Style
- My color scheme (blues, grays, and whites!)
- Adding Natural pieces (seagrass, boxwood, flowers)
- Twin bed to compliment the small size of the room
- Storage
- Photo of my Grandfather somewhere in the room
The room came together starting with the rug, believe it or not. I found a beautiful gray and white one and used it as the foreground for the rest of my vision. Below is an alternative with the exact one I purchased (on the right).
Rug:
This basket was a must! I purchased mine at HomeGoods for around $30. My mother visited my house not too long ago and saw mine that holds some extra blankets in the living room and she mentioned to me that she didn’t care what else was in the room but that she needed that basket! Below are some other beautiful seagrass baskets! They are wonderful for storage and add some natural touches to a room which is a definite in Farmhouse Style.
Basket:
Keeping the room airy and light was a priority for me. I wanted this room to be a place that was peaceful for my family to come into so crisp white is what I went with for the bedding. I found mine in the photo at IKEA for around $40, you can click through the similar options below for some other ideas as well 🙂
Duvet Cover:
When it came to the bedding, I didn’t want it to feel to washed out so I snuck in a little pop of color with a light gray/blue sheet set that I came across at HomeGoods. At just $40 it was a steal for the entire set! I have listed some very similar ones (involuting the beautiful farmhouse style striped set that I almost went with!) below.
Sheets:
This lamp was actually the second purchase I made for this room. It was the first true country style things that I picked up. I loved how it was beautiful chicken wire but that it was still pretty subtle. You’ll see later in this post as well how wonderfully it ended up matching the hardware that I had on the dresser! Snagged this one at Hobby Lobby with a coupon 🙂
Lamp:
What is a room without some greenery, honestly?! I have some form of greenery in every room in my home. Most are faux to keep things easy but I feel like it’s so appealing to the eye and really just makes the room look fresh. I picked up the piece in the photos at my local HomeGoods. My husband donned me the “Boxwood Bandit”…whenever I see something boxwood, I snag it up! lol
Plant:
I picked up a nice small arrangement of faux white roses from HomeGoods as well because I thought it would add some feminine flare to the room. I ended up placing these on top of the chest of drawers and they went perfectly!
Flowers:
Another easy way to add a farmhouse touch, wire baskets! Not only are they a great little spot for storage, this one broke up a very white space with its dark color which I loved!
Farmhouse Wire Basket:
This was one of the most special parts of the room, the photo that I framed of my mom and grandfather. She didn’t know I was adding this little touch and only found out when I revealed the room to her. I picked up a rustic wooden frame at HomeGoods and found a photo that fit perfectly! I placed it on the nightstand and let’s just the reveal was amazing!
Photo Frame:
Can we ever have too many throw blankets? I don’t think so haha I found the throw that completely enveloped my theme while I was browsing for something else at HomeGoods actually. It was light and not too big so it was perfect to add at the foot of the twin size bed. (similar ones below!)
Blanket:
Both the dresser and the bed came from IKEA. I have he exact bed I purchased for her in my guest room in a larger size and over the years it has held up so beautifully! This was a no-brainer considering our budget and the use of the room 🙂
Dresser:
Bed:
No room transformation is complete without a candle, it’s the little things, and scent is SO important!
Candle:
I pick up mini boxwood wreaths all the time because I would essentially love one everywhere in my home! I have two in my kitchen right now over the window treatments and they add such a beautiful farmhouse touch! I picked up one at HomeGoods and used some burlap ribbon to secure it over the window pane mirror that I picked up at Hobby Lobby!
Mini Wreath:
Another attempt at not being too matchy matchy was presented when I found this piece at HomeGoods. I loved its gray hued brown wood and thought it would be a perfect contrast next to the white bed.
Night Stand:
The mattress I purchased for the bed was SUPER comfy and was very inexpensive!! Shop it via the link below!

I’m already itching for my next room transformation!! Can’t wait for my next opportunity 🙂
