Hey guys! I am coming to you this glorious day with my first blog post as a 32 year old! 🙌🏽☺️ Today’s post is super special because I am writing all about my 6 day beach road-trip vacation, that was in an RV might I add, for my birthday week! Renting an RV is a super easy way to see some beautiful locations all across the USA. This was my first time even being in an RV and, well…I am now considering purchasing one in the future! This post will be the story of how 8 friends got together, hopped in an RV (for the first time ever!), and made our way from New Jersey to South Carolina and back. Trust me, it was a mighty interesting trip! 😂 Read all about my amazing 6 day itinerary below! ⬇️
RENTING AN RV
Ok, what is one to do when they don’t own an RV but want to vacation in one?! Rent one! I know there are quite a few RV renting websites out there but after much research, I found that http://www.rvshare.com was the easiest to navigate with the best variety of rental options for what we were looking for. You can search by the amount of beds, the model and year, and even whether it has cool things like an outdoor shower or backup camera! I highly recommend this site as everything for us went super smooth! thumbs up👍🏽
FIRST STOP: Myrtle Beach, SC (Days 1-3)
When choosing the locations for our trip, we thought as a group it would be best to choose two beach locations so that we wouldn’t be moving around too much in the 6 days that we had. No one wants to spend their whole vacation on the road, right?! Myrtle Beach was the perfect location to begin with. It was the longest leg of our “tour”, and therefore, best to get it out of the way while we were still excited about the beginning of our trip lol After 12+ hours, several gas stops, a Costco and Walmart stop, and a food stop, we arrived a Myrtle Beach KOA.
I can’t recommend KOA’s enough! Both that we stayed at one this trip were so friendly, welcoming, clean, and overall just so relaxing…just what we were looking for! The Myrtle Beach KOA is located just a few blocks from the beach and if you opt to rent a golf cart (which I highly recommend), you can drive it right over to the beach! The beaches aren’t too crowded, and the people are super nice.
WHAT WE LOVED IN MYRTLE BEACH, SC
- The beach itself is wonderful! Beware of the sun though, it is stronger than you may think. I never ever burn and even with SPF 50, I got really toasty in just a few hours! ☀️
- Broadway at the Beach: this place is PHENOMENAL (and not actually at the beach at all 🤔) for an afternoon stroll or a night out. Im talking Wet Willies, Hard Rock, Rides, Restaurants, Shops, and more! You could definitely spend a few hours here and we enjoyed it both during the day and evening just the same! Margaritaville, Paula Deen’s Restaurant, and many more awesome places here!
- Ocean Blvd: This is the Main Street and has tons of shopping, restaurants, live music, and honestly is very reminiscent of any beach downtown strip. It is definitely where you want to park and walk around!
- The Sky Wheel: this is the famous Ferris wheel in Myrtle Beach. I didn’t think the views were all that astounding, however, I think at night it may have been a bit more enthusing lol I believe it was $14 for 6 times around. If you need to kill time, I say do it!
- If you’re into mini-golf…this is your heaven! There were SO many mini golf parks along that main strip! I swore we were doing circles because I kept seeing new ones! lol
- “House Hunting”: The girls and I took the golf cart 5+ miles or so down the boulevard and discovered upscale resorts, a Starbucks on every corner, and the most beautiful jaw-dropping beach homes! If you’re having a lazy afternoon, definitely do this, its so relaxing to cruise with the wind in your hair and see the beautiful homes with private beaches!
SECOND STOP: CAPE CHARLES, VA (Days 4-6)
Cape Charles is a beautiful little town that is a part of Virginia Beach. It is definitely a smaller, more quiet town, something we learned later on, but ended up working out just fine! Again, we chose to stay at a KOA and didn’t regret it at all! The Cape Charles Chesapeake Bay KOA is incredible! The RV sites are a little closer together than in Myrtle Beach, however, everyone was so friendly that it didn’t affect us at all! The bathhouses are impeccable, and best of all, this KOA is located on its very own private beach! 🏖 The ease of being able to be on the beach and run back to the RV for some more drinks or to grill up some lunch was golden!
WHAT WE LOVED IN CAPE CHARLES, VA
- When I tell you Cape Charles had the best sunset I’ve EVER seen, I mean it! The photo above is a raw image taken at sunset while sitting on the beach 😍
- The Shanty Restaurant: AMAZING seafood, amazing views (located in a marina with perfect sunset views), corn hole games, and great handcrafted drinks! The shuttle from the KOA will bring you here, too!
- The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel: You might wonder how we can love a bridge so much but honestly, the bridge/tunnel is such an amazing drive that I just had to include it! On the drive in, we cruised across this almost 18 mile long bridge/tunnel and we were shocked at how long it was! It seemed never ending, but with the gorgeous bay on either side of you, the views were worth it 😎
- Cape Charles Brewery: We didn’t get the chance to stop in here, but I had it on my “if we have time” list because it got such great reviews!
- The Oyster Farm: We got a brief tour of the grounds of the Oyster Farm on our way to The Shanty. The grounds are beautiful with million dollar homes and beautiful marina views. You can dine here for 5 star dining service, think a fancy occasion kind of dinner. Or, you can head to the local beach restaurant like we did and just stop off in this location for some good photos 🤣.
Overall, I must say, we definitely made the most of our 6 days during this trip. We ventured out just enough to enjoy the local fare and see some of the town, but we also really took the time to soak in the stillness of the campgrounds. I think some of the most fun we had was while we were around the campfire or just hanging back at the RV. You see, that’s the great thing about having an RV, you are truly always with your home.
If you are contemplating taking a little road trip any time soon, I highly recommend renting an RV! If you are a first timer, don’t be turned off by fear! With good instruction in the beginning, it is really just a small learning curve and the memories you will make will be unforgettable.
I am already planning my next vacation which I’m super excited about! It doesn’t involve an RV but I definitely want to RV road trip again very soon!!
