DIY Step Hem Jeans With Photos!

They seem to be all the rage in our favorite stores to shop, the step hem jean trend! I initially purchased my first pair during the Nordstrom sale and got an awesome deal. The problem with my purchase, however, was that the petite version wasn’t available so I went ahead and bought the regular inseam and it proved to be a little bit of a challenge. I found that they fit absolutely perfectly all over, except the length. I whipped out my scissors and trimmed them a little bit and they were finally perfect! This got me to thinking, I could probably turn any old jeans that I had laying around into a fresh pair with a step hem, and I was right!

Items you will need: 

Jeans

Scissors

Measuring tape or Ruler

Chalk

You want to begin by trimming about an inch or so off of the hem of the jeans. This acts as a way to discard of the original hem.

Using your ruler and chalk, measure up from that cut line about another 1.5 inches. You can eyeball it or measure more precisely by throwing the jeans on again at this point to measure exactly where you want it. Cut in the formation of the dotted line above.

You should be left with this rectangle cutout shape. As you can see in the photo, I have made sure to not cut the “hard seams” on either side of my rectangle. These will prevent your jeans from ripping up too high with washes and wear. Now the only thing that is left is to throw these through a wash and dry cycle. When they come out they will be beautifully frayed!
